The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is introduced by the Indian Government, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), on 12th July, 2016. This statutory authority was formerly functioning as an attached office of the then Planning Commission which is today recognized as NITI Aayog.

The main motive behind the formation of the Unique Identification Authority of India is to issue Unique Identification numbers, called as Aadhaar, to all Indian residents.
